Tejpal case adjourned to March 18

The sexual assault case against former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal came up on Monday before the Additional Sessions Court, Mapusa, for arguments on framing of charges and as requested by the defence counsel, the matter has now been adjourned to March 18.

The matter was among the 30-odd cases which were listed to be transferred to another court in order to reduce the burden on the Additional Sessions Court. However, as it is the sessions court which is designated to exclusively try the offence of rape, this particular matter is unlikely to be transferred, it was learnt.
The matter was listed after the clone copy of the data on the accuser’s mobile phone and laptop was made available to Tejpal. The data allegedly includes communications via emails and text messages which were exchanged by Tejpal and his junior female colleague. Tejpal has claimed that this data will establish the element of consent on his colleague’s part, thereby proving to be clinching evidence in proving his innocence.
