To facilitate movement during the bridge construction period, the government had created a temporary passage by installing pipes along an internal road adjacent to the bridge. However, continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days caused nearby rivers and streams to overflow, and the floodwaters swept away the temporary road.
With the alternative route destroyed and the new bridge still closed, residents, students and the farmers faced serious difficulties in travelling between Chandel and Hasapur.
Taking note of the situation, Pernem MLA Praveen Arlekar went to the site to inspect the Chandel bridge along with Sarpanch Bala Shetkar and others.
After the inspection, Arlekar said the Chandel-Hasapur bridge will be opened for light vehicles from Tuesday.
Speaking to media persons, Arlekar further said the government had built a bridge on this river 40 years ago, which had become narrow and weak.
“A new bridge has just been completed, but internal alternative road got washed away due to floods and caused inconvenience to locals. However, the new bridge will be thrown open for light vehicles from Tuesday,” said Arlekar.
Further details regarding the movement of heavy vehicles and traffic regulations are expected to be announced by authorities concerned.
