Tender to redevelop KA’s open-air stage after June 4

PANAJI

With the demolition of Kala Academy’s open-air auditorium completed, the redevelopment of the stage is slated to commence only after the ongoing model code of conduct is lifted on June 4.

Government sources revealed to The Goan that the Public Works Department (PWD) reportedly plans to tender the project post-June 4. In a recent meeting of all the agencies concerned, PWD conveyed to the attendees the completion of the design for the stage.

“The design will soon be submitted for approval to proceed with the tendering process. Once sanctioned, PWD will release a tender inviting bids for the infrastructural works of the stage. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is also overseeing the project,” the source said.

Minister of Art & Culture Govind Gaude, when contacted by The Goan, stated that only construction related to the stage is required, as the sound system and stairs remain intact and do not require any alterations. The work reportedly also includes the slab.

The demolition that began just recently was completed about 2-3 days ago. Gaude said the debris had been cleared by the PWD.

The entire slab of the auditorium collapsed during heavy rainfall last July, coinciding with the ongoing renovation works in other portions of the iconic structure.

The debris was thereafter covered with tarpaulin sheets; however, the Opposition demanded an inquiry alleging corruption in the overall renovation works.
