Tense moments as Betim-Panaji ferry drifts with 37 on board
Panic gripped about 35 commuters of the Betim-Panaji ferry boat, after it drifted due to gusty winds and was stuck opposite the Panaji market in river Mandovi on Thursday evening.

The River Navigation Department (RND) summoned another ferry boat to pull the stuck ferry boat, but due to low tide, the second ferry boat sent for rescue operation also got stuck. The fire fighters, police and other rescue teams rushed to the site. About 35 people and about 12 two-wheelers were left stranded in the ferry boat. Later, about 25 commuters were rescued by the Marine Police, but the concerned two-wheeler owners confronted the ferry boat operators and preferred to stay in the ferry boat till it was taken to the ferry wharf. They chose to remain with their vehicles even though that meant waiting with their vehicles for several hours until the tide returned, which was expected only late at night. Sources informed that the both the ferry boats will be removed during high tide. The coastal police and fire force are monitoring the situation. The busy Panaji-Betim ferry service was discontinued for some time due to the incident.
The State Government has notified a total of 85 out of the 190 odd panchayats in Goa to be economically weaker panchayats making them eligible for grants for the current financial year.
