Tense moments were witnessed in some wards of panchayats in Sattari taluka, when supporters and candidates were involved in verbal clashes late Saturday night.
As the residents of Ward 3 of Morle Panchayat in Sattari taluka had decided to boycott the panchayat election to protest against the reservation of the ward as ST, no candidate filed the nominations, due to which the election was not held in the ward.
According to Valpoi Police, supporters and candidates were involved in verbal clashes, but no offence were registered. The situation turned tense in some places and immediate action by police brought the situation under control.
Police sources further informed that verbal clashes broke after the supporters of some candidates tried to lure the voters, but no complaints were filed.
People in large numbers turned out to cast their votes in 12 panchayats in Sattari taluka and no complaints were filed. Some wards of Bhironda, Nagargao, Thane and Morle saw huge turnout at 7 am, while in other panchayats, there was low turnout at the start, but voters went to vote in large number after 10 am. Six candidates were elected unopposed in Thane, Bhironda, Khetoda and Nagargo panchayats.
