Tension prevailed at Bhagvati temple as the temple committee president and the Mahajans were involved in heated arguments during the anniversary celebration of the Bhagvati temple at Tuem
on Monday.
Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte and Pernem Mamlatdar Ishant Sawant intervened in the matter and brought the situation under control.
According to sources, Bhagvati temple committee president Sarvesh Naik Tuvekar and Mahajans were involved in a heated argument over the issue of collection of donations for the temple. However, with the situation getting tense, some residents who were present at the site informed Pernem Mamlatdar Ishant Sawant about the
situation.
Sawant along with the police force rushed to the site and tried to pacify both the groups. After some time, the Mamlatdar managed to bring the situation under control.
In the meantime, Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte also rushed to the site and assured both the groups of finding a satisfactory solution to the issue and till then all the ceremonies should be celebrated at the temple without any
disturbance.
Speaking to local reporters, Sopte said the dispute had been going on since the last six months and the Mahajans had submitted several memorandums to the Mamlatdar. “If the Mamlatdar had solved this problem at the right time, today’s situation could have been avoided,” he added.
Directing the Mamlatdar to take cognizance of the issue as soon as possible, Sopte said: “When my wife and I had visited the temple some days back, the temple committee president had confronted me. The temple priest was removed from his duty after he gave blessings to us.”
The police at the site maintained law and order situation till the end of the temple anniversary celebrations.
It may be recalled that the Mahajans were demanding the resignation of the present committee president, after accusing him of preventing villagers from celebrating the traditional ceremonies of the temple. The temple committee president Tuvekar had claimed that the previous temple committee had misused the temple property and that he was not involved in any wrongdoings.
The Mahajans had demanded the intervention of the Pernem Mamlatdar in the matter to solve the issue.
