Reacting strongly to waste water being released in gutters causing water contamination in Charavane village, Thane panchayat has threatened to disconnect electricity and water connection if residents fail to stop release of waste water in gutters and set up soak pits within a month.
A number of people had taken ill in Charavane recently and health officials had found the water contaminated, due to waste water being discharged into the gutters and seeping into water bodies.
Alarmed by this outbreak, residents began putting pressure on the Thane panchayat to take serious action against those found releasing waste water into gutters.
Acting on public demands, the Thane panchayat met under the leadership of Sarpanch Sarita Gaonkar and took serious note of the outbreak in Charavane village. They decided to issue a special notice at public places in the village instructing people to stop the release of waste water immediately.
The panchayat also decided to give residents a period of one month to dig soak pits to ensure proper waste management, failing which the panchayat has threatened to disconnect power and water supply to the houses.
“Many houses do not have soak pit facilities, due to which waste water is being released in the gutters and this is a serious health hazard for the people,” said local Panch Prajila Gawas.
