Congratulating the new Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar, the Aam Admi Party (AAP), Vasco, on Saturday advised him to implement the existing ban on the use of plastic carry bags in the municipal jurisdiction.
AAP Vasco leader Loretta D’Souza said she was informed by AAP Goa Convenor Elvis Gomes that the then MMC councillors in 2004 had shown tremendous foresight and had approved his proposal to ban the indiscriminate use of plastic carry bags in the municipal jurisdiction, which was later notified by law through the official gazette.
“I was quite surprised when our party state chief Elvis Gomes told me that Vasco had led the way a long time ago as the first municipal body to ban the use of plastic carry bags, which was considered a threat to successful waste management.”
“There is no reason not to implement it now in all vigour. Even Maharashtra has banned plastic bags having realised that it was killing the environment due to absence of systems to handle it,” said D’Souza.
“Kritesh Gaonkar with his councillors and MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes should go into overdrive and implement the notification. It will complement the efforts which are made with Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) and also help eradicate the plastic menace in Vasco. Vasco should give a lead to Goa in this regard,” D’Souza added.
D’Souza also said protection of environment was high on the agenda of the AAP.
