Residents of several wards in Thane Sattari Panchayat and surrounding areas have demanded completion of Charvane dam on priority.
The villagers said that if the dam is completed then the problem of about 7,000 villagers, who are facing water scarcity, will be solved.
A meeting of residents chaired by ZP member Fati Gaonkar decided to submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar highlighting water scarcity in Thane-Sattari, which can be solved on completion of Charvane dam.
It was also discussed that the residents of Hivrem, Charvane, Pal-Dhangarwada Zarme and Mauxi still get water supply through tankers.
The residents said the problem can be solved after if the Charvane dam is completed, from where water could be pumped and supplied to villagers through taps.
ZP member Fati Gaonkar informed that the entire area in Thane Panchayat is facing acute water shortage. “The water level in the area has dipped. Rivulets, springs and wells have gone dry, and building or completion of dam here is the only option,” Gaonkar said.
He further said the dam work was initiated in 2000, but the work was halted after the forest department refused to grant clearance for the project, and since then the work is come to standstill.
