A number of houses were damaged and services were disrupted while fire services, municipal workers and locals were kept on their toes after thundershowers lashed parts of Sanguem and Quepem talukas on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Some trees came crashing down on the main road leading to the town area at Sanguem, while there was total power failure in many parts for some time.
At Dando and at Nondurlem in Sanguem, traffic was disrupted after huge tree branches fell across the road. However, it was cleared by municipal workers and firefighters with assistance from local youth.
A tree also fell on the Government Primary School at Nondurlem-Sanguem.
A number of houses were damaged at Vakarwada and at Tarimol in Sanguem and Mirabag ward in Sanvordem village.
Sanvordem panch Sanjay Naik informed that several residents faced losses after teak and coconut trees fell on houses. Gorgoro Naik, Sripad Naik, Damodar Naik, Deepak Naik, Leonara Costa, Gurudas Naik, Shankar Naik and Sandhya Naik are some of the house owners who suffered losses, Naik informed.
Several trees fell on electricity cables disrupting power supply. Linesman and other field staff from the electricity department were seen moving across various places to restore power supply in Sanguem region.
Plantations and other cultivations were also reported damaged in many places. However, the exact extent and assessment of the damages and loss to property could not be ascertained due to total disruption in power supply and communication facilities.
