In a significant step towards global recognition of Goa’s rich cultural traditions, the Tiatr Academy of Goa has submitted a comprehensive proposal seeking the inclusion of Goan tiatr in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

On Friday, Anthony Barbosa, President of the Academy, formally handed over the proposal along with all the required documents to Vivek Naik, Director of Art and Culture, for further processing and transmission to the appropriate national authorities. The submission marks an important milestone in ongoing efforts to secure international recognition for one of Goa’s most cherished performing art forms.

The proposal has been routed through the Directorate of Art and Culture in Panaji and will be forwarded to the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Section of the Sangeet Natak Akademi in New Delhi, which operates under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The Akademi plays a key role in evaluating and recommending cultural nominations for UNESCO recognition.

“Goan tiatr is a distinctive form of musical theatre that has been an integral part of the state’s cultural identity for over a century. Performed primarily in the Konkani language, tiatr combines elements of drama, music, satire, and social commentary. It has historically served as a powerful medium for highlighting social issues, encouraging public discourse, and reflecting the everyday lives and concerns of Goan society”, stated Anthony Barbosa, President, TAG.

In its submission, the Academy highlighted that tiatr is not only a form of entertainment but also a vital cultural expression that connects Goans across generations and geographies. The art form enjoys strong support among the Goan diaspora, further underlining its role in preserving cultural identity beyond regional boundaries.

The proposal also underscores the potential benefits of UNESCO inscription. Recognition at the international level is expected to contribute significantly to the preservation, documentation, and promotion of tiatr on a global platform. It would also help safeguard the livelihoods of numerous artists associated with the field, including actors, playwrights, musicians, singers, and technical crew members who have sustained and evolved the tradition over decades.

The Academy has appealed for the support of government authorities to expedite the nomination process, noting that such recognition would not only honour the legacy of tiatr but also strengthen ongoing efforts to protect and promote Goa’s intangible cultural heritage.

Cultural enthusiasts and stakeholders across Goa have welcomed the move, describing it as a timely and necessary initiative. Many believe that inclusion in the UNESCO list would bring global visibility to tiatr, encouraging greater appreciation and investment in the art form.
