“We will take up the issue of the farmers who had to face the brunt due to the disease that destroyed the chilli crop in Aldona. Agricultural officials will guide the farmers on how to claim compensation for the loss,” said Ticlo.
The local MLA along with assistant agricultural officer, Nilesh Vaigankar visited the fields of local farmers and saw the damage done to chilli crops in and around Aldona.
Local farmer, Priya Bhagat informed that she had done fairly well with her chilli production last year and expected to do better this year.
“Unfortunately, the crop was struck with a disease and most of my chilli crop was destroyed. The government should compensate us and make good our loss,” Bhagat said.
She also apprised the MLA and the agriculture officer that most of the wells in the fields dry up during the summer.
“The department needs to clean the wells in a bid to rejuvenate them,” she said.
It may be recalled that last month The Goan had highlighted the issue of chilli crop in parts of Bardez having been struck with ‘leaf curl’ disease.
He further said agriculture department does not look after wells and the farmers will have to approach the water resource department regarding them.
Ticlo assured the farmers that he will take up the issue of compensation with the agriculture department. He also assured to take up the wells issue with the water resources department.
