Five members of a family, including a one-and-a-half-year-old child, were injured after a massive mango tree from a church compound collapsed onto their house in Aldona late Sunday night.

The incident occurred around 11 pm when the tree suddenly gave way, crashing onto the residence and trapping the occupants inside. Immediate rescue efforts were launched, and the injured were rushed to the Aldona Primary Health Centre before being shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.

The toddler sustained a head injury and required stitches on the forehead, raising concern among doctors and family members. The child’s mother also suffered a head injury and began vomiting at the PHC, prompting doctors to refer her to GMC for advanced care and scans.

A member of the affected family, said the tree split as it fell, with a large portion crashing directly onto their home.

“All of us were inside when it happened. We were rushed to the hospital immediately. Thankfully, the reports are normal, but our house and belongings have been completely damaged,” he said.

Local MLA Carlos Ferreira said he alerted the fire brigade as soon as he was informed. Fire personnel reached the spot promptly and cleared the debris, preventing further harm.

Officials estimated the loss at over Rs 1.5 lakh.

Panchayat ward member Pranesh Naik, who visited the site, said the family had a narrow escape and credited the swift response of emergency services for averting a bigger tragedy.
