Although the number of malaria cases in Bardez has marginally reduced, Bardez Deputy Collector Kapil Phadte said strict action will be taken against scrapyard owners who fail to follow protocols as scrapyards continued to be fertile ground for mosquito breeding.
“We have received complaints with regards to scrapyards and I have taken the issue seriously. I have asked the mamlatdars to act on the complaints and as time unfolds we will take strict action against the scrapyard owners,” Phadte said.
The deputy collector was chairing a meeting of the block level committee for control of vector-borne diseases in his office at the government complex in Mapusa.
Besides medical officers from the health centres in Bardez, representatives of labour, PWD, KTC and Directorate of Panchayat attended the meeting.
Speaking further, Phadte said several construction sites failed to display the mandatory boards with details like survey no, number of labourers working at the site.
“We have decided to have a joint inspection along with representatives from various departments, including the labour department,” he said.
He also informed that an awareness drive would be conducted along with the help of the health department which would focus on malaria, chikungunya and other diseases.
The deputy collector has also directed the Block Development Officers to write letters to all the 33 panchayats in Bardez to carry out de-silting of drainages. He has also written to the Mapusa Municipal Council to clean the drains in all the 20 wards of the municipality.
