CORTALIM
The election to the Cortalim Comunidade on December 6 is likely to witness a strong contest, with at least two panels vying for the managing committee for the period 2016-18.
According to a source at the Administrator of South Goa Comunidades, Margao, some comunidades' shares have been transferred in order to cobble up a majority so as to capture power in these age-old institutions.
While the managing committees are elected unanimously in most of the comunidade bodies, a few cash-rich comunidades, especially in Mormugao taluka, often witness contests by fielding panels.
Another comunidade in Mormugao Taluka “ Sancoale Comunidade, which hosts Goa's largest slum in Zuari Nagar - will go to polls on January 10.
The election to Sancoale Comunidade managing committee assumes significance, especially with elections to the State Assembly due in 2017. Sancoale accounts for at least 10,000 voters for the Sancoale comunidade poll, and therefore this becomes a deciding factor in Cortalim Assembly constituency elections.
