In its report, the CAG has pointed out that the Department of Tourism has paid service tax to the tune of `8.72 crore to the agencies it received services from during the years 2013-14 and 2015-2016 with a bulk of the service tax payments being made to Drishti Lifesaving Pvt Ltd for providing beach safety and lifeguarding services to the tune of `7.70 crore.
"The DoT, however, did not claim CENVAT credit aggregating to `8.72 crore in the respective years. Inaction on the part of the department to avail the CENVAT credit in the corresponding years resulted in a loss of refund claim of `1.40 crore," the CAG noted.
The department would have been eligible for a refund of `1.40 crore. It can no longer claim credit after six months of the date of issue of documents and hence the time for availing credit for the earlier period has lapsed.
