Already witnessing dwindling footfalls and an economic slowdown induced fall in business, the tourism industry of Goa is fearing the ongoing Mhadei row could hit them even
more.
The Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) said on Thursday that although the Mhadei water sharing dispute involving Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra is serious, care should be taken to insulate tourism from the potential ill-effects of the
dispute.
“The Travel and Tourism Association of Goa would like to appeal to all Goans to refrain from disrupting or opposing the declining tourism in the State of Goa because of the Mhadei issue,” said Savio Messias, who is president of TTAG.
“We do understand that the Mhadei issue is a serious one, which needs to be settled expeditiously and we are equally concerned about it,” Messias said, adding raising the issue should not be at the cost of destroying tourism
in Goa.
“Tourism is declining in Goa and in the garb of solving the Mhadei issue we should not be seen as responsible for destruction of tourism in Goa,” the
statement adds.
Messias urged toning down of statements which could dissuade tourists from visiting the
State.
“In correcting or objecting to one wrong we cannot do another wrong. We need to be positive rather than negative in approach,” the statement issued by
Messias said.
