Attribute it to the weather conditions or otherwise, traditional fishermen along Salcete coastal, especially in Benaulim, has netted tonnes of fish, including the much-sought after mackerels in the last two days.
Reason: Shoals of fish, including mackerels have been found close to the shore, within a distance of 500 metres to a kilometre from the shore, helping the traditional fishermen to catch the fish without going into deep sea.
In fact, the wholesale fish market was flooded with local variety of fish, including mackerels brought from the coast, right from Cansaulim to Benaulim. Perhaps for the first time, the price of mackerel came down to less than Rs 100 a kg on Tuesday.
Benaulim-based traditional fisherman Pele Fernandes said the presence of the fish very close to the coast has helped the fishermen from Benaulim to net sizeable catch in the last two days. “We have been fortunate to net sizeable catch of fish, including big and medium size mackerel in the last two days. The presence of the fish close to the shore has helped us to save cost of fuel and making the fish available to the customer at affordable price,” he said.
Pele said the fresh fish netted by the traditional fishermen from Benaulim in the last two days was sold at the beach itself to the growing number of customers, looking for fresh fish and the remaining catch taken to the wholesale fish market for sale.
