CANACONA
Like every year with the beginning of the rains, traditional fishing has come alive in Canacona, even as mechanised fishing has come to a halt for the next two months.
The availability of fresh fish, especially from the sea, has become rare since the fishing ban came into effect from June 1. Even the canoes which braved the rough seas have stopped venturing out.
By morning or late evening, several traditional fishing activities are seen along the shoreline. Anglers are seen taking home fresh catch.
The traditional fishermen are using ‘pagear’ (a unique fishing net, which is thrown in the water on the shore).
Such fishing activities are normally witnessed on the shores at Maxem creek, Talpona, Rajbhag-Tarir, Patnem-Colomb stretch, Palolem-Pont, and at the extreme northern end of Agonda.
Some of the catch is used for home consumption and if in excess it is sold in the local markets.
The ‘pagear’ mostly nets Shevto (mullet). Raus (Indian salmon), sangot (catfish), Tamso (red snapper) Murdhoshi (ladyfish), Chonak (Sea-perch) are some of the other varieties caught.
Such fishing points are located at the mouth of the river or at the sea-river confluence.
