A container truck struck the crash barriers at Karmalghat and got stranded, disrupting traffic along the NH66 highway in Canacona for a major part of the day on Saturday.
According to sources, the Rajasthan-registered container truck was proceeding towards Margao, when the cargo container struck the crash barriers while negotiating a sharp turn in the wee hours of Saturday.
The driver could not get the truck to move ahead and the long vehicle was stranded at the site.
Initially, vehicles crossed over by risking a collision with oncoming vehicles.
Later in the day, policemen were placed at two ends to regulate traffic on both sides, even as driving became a challenge amid heavy rains which reduced visibility to a great extent.
By afternoon, a large crane was sent to assist the trailer driver to free the container from the crash barriers.
After several failed attempts, the crane finally managed to remove the truck from the site, but the road got damaged in the process as large chunks of tar came out at the site.
Highway traffic resume to normalcy by evening, after the container truck was moved away from the narrow Karmalghat section of the NH66 highway.
