An autopsy into the death of Deodita Fernandes (64) a Goan-origin spinster holding Portuguese nationality, has revealed that she had been strangulated to death in her flat at Naikavaddo-Calangute.
Calangute police have identified some suspects in this case and since they have fled to neighbouring states, police teams have been dispatched to trace them.
An autopsy was performed at GMC Hospital in Bambolim on Saturday morning, where it was established that the deceased had been strangulated with the help of a rope.
Fernandes, a resident of Karrasvaddo, Mapusa, owned a flat on the third floor of the Benson building in Naikavaddo, Calangute.
The building was undergoing renovation, and Fernandes had visited the flat on Thursday morning to oversee the work. When she failed to return home by evening, her concerned relatives attempted to reach her by phone, only to find her mobile phone unresponsive. They later went to the flat and found it locked from the outside.
Using a duplicate key, the caretaker and the relatives unlocked the door, only to find Fernandes’ lifeless body in the dining room. A thorough examination of the flat revealed that all belongings were intact, except for the deceased’s wallet and mobile phone, which were missing. Further investigations are in progress.
