Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha on Friday afternoon said
there was no other alternative but to close down the stretch of the road between Cortalim circle to Sharayu Toyota showroom.
The Goan had highlighted the proposed lengthy traffic diversion plan for vehicles plying between Margao and Panaji via Cortalim for as long as a year.
“Since the bridge flyover has to be completed within a stipulated time, there is no other alternative but to close down the stretch of the road between Cortalim Circle and Sharayu Toyota showroom to allow work to go on this stretch,” said Saldanha, when contacted for comments on the proposed traffic diversion plan.
“We must bear in mind at all times that traffic along the proposed diverted route will increase tremendously and the distance for vehicles plying between Panaji to Margao and vice versa, will, as stated, increase by 18 kms, which also means more hours of travelling.”
The Cortalim MLA, however, stated that systems should be in place well before this traffic diversion is put into effect.
“The route to be followed by vehicles has to be definite, marked by using proper road signages and monitored by traffic police in adequate numbers.”
“Similarly, existing inner village road diversions, such as those at Shindolim-Sancoale, Nauta-Church street, Quelossim-Curpavaddo-Maddant, which may be used by vehicles to cut short the distance, should be monitored by the traffic police, given the fact that these roads are also used by school and college students and we cannot afford to have any mishaps occurring on these road diversions,” added Saldanha.
“A small suggestion which could be considered. If conditions prevailing along the proposed closed stretch between Cortalim Circle and Sharayu Toyota showroom permits only two wheelers and light motor could be allowed as this would decrease pressure on the proposed traffic diversion route,” said Saldanha.
She requested the public using the proposed road diversion to abide and cooperate with the authorities.
“I also request the bridge authority to complete the work within this stretch at the earliest to minimise the inconvenience to motorists and commuters,” said Saldanha.
