In the hope of educating and equipping the next generation of motor vehicle users with the right knowledge of road etiquette as well as cyber security, Goa Traffic Police will organise a five-day free ‘Road safety summer camp’ at Panaji, Calangute and Margao from May 2 to 6.
Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander stated that the police department is expecting at each of the venues around 100 participants between the ages of 13 to 16 years, potential applicants for driver’s permits within the next five years.
“There will be talks about signages, rules of overtaking, right of way and all other aspects involved in the use of roads. Many acquire licenses through some means or the other but fail to understand the rules.”
“The idea is to create awareness among vehicle users and pedestrians alike,” DGP Chander stated.
He further disclosed that majority of the fatal and major road accidents in Goa occur due to over speeding, drunk driving, faulty overtaking, bikes cutting through lanes, use of mobiles while operating vehicles and failure to wear helmets.
The camp will be held at St Joseph High School at Calangute, Club Gaspar Dias at Miramar in Panaji and at Ravindra
Bhavan in Margao.

Apart from road and cyber security awareness, the coursework will also focus on practical administration of first aid and functioning of the traffic police.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle, DySP P B Shirwaikar, Panaji traffic police inspector Brandon D’Souza, PI Shaikh Salim and PI Mohan Gaude will deliver the lectures on traffic awareness. Lectures on cyber crime and cyber security will be delivered by cyber crime police inspector Rajesh Job.
Study material, refreshments as well as prizes will be provided to the participants free of cost by the police department.
DGP Chander has made a plea to the management and staff of all schools to take keen interest in promoting such awareness creation initiatives and to appoint a road safety coordinator for communicating with the police.
