Two policemen were killed in separate road mishaps in Canacona and Pernem on Monday.
In one incident, a 39-year-old head police constable attached to Canacona police station was involved in a mishap in the wee hours of Monday and died while undergoing treatment at GMC a few hours later.
According to Canacona police, the mishap took place as Sandesh Balsu Bhagat of Bhagatwada near Char-Rasta in Canacona was returning home on his motorcycle after his duty at the Canacona police station.
As he reached Nagarcem, the motorcycle rammed into stray cattle squatting under the Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Highway bridge sometime between 12.30 am and 12.45 am.
He sustained grievous injuries in the mishap and was moved to the Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC). He was later shifted to the GMC hospital at Bambolim, where he breathed his last at about 6 am. Locals said many stray cattle squat under the NH66 Bypass bridge at Nagarcem, catching several motorists off-guard while travelling on the Chaudi-Char Rasta main road, which is part of the highway.
In the other incident, Traffic ASI Naresh Narvekar (50) from Paliem-Keri in Pernem died in a road mishap in the village on Monday.
According to sources, Narvekar was returning home from work at the Pernem Traffic Cell when he lost control of the car. The vehicle toppled and went off the road, killing him on the spot.
Locals have expressed concern over the rise in road mishaps in Pernem and have demanded urgent steps by authorities to curb these.
