A trip to Goa ended in tragedy for a couple from Pune when they were killed after their car rammed into a tree and later plunged into the Arpora creek early Monday morning.
According to the police, the deceased, Shubham Dedge (28) and Ishwari Deshpande (25) had arrived for a vacation on Wednesday and were staying in a hotel at Baga-Arpora.
They were leaving for Pune early Monday morning when Dedge lost control of the vehicle near Park Rio Hotel. The car rammed into a roadside tree and fell into the Arpora creek.
The couple was stranded and unable to exit the car which was toppled as all four door windows were fully closed.
Locals alerted the fire services and a fire tender from Pilerne went to the site to rescue the couple inside the car. Firefighters -- A V Bandekar, P P Sawant, A B Kholkar, N N Sawal and DC Sinari took part in the operations under the guidance of assistant fire officer Damodar Pednekar and later recovered the bodies from the vehicle.
Anjuna PSI Akshay Parsekar and a team conducted the Panchanama and the car was later removed from the creek with the help of a crane.
The bodies have been sent to the GMC and an autopsy will take place once the next of kin arrive in the State. Anjuna police are further investigating the case.
