A driver had a lucky escape when an inter-state trailer carrying large pipes toppled by the side of the NH66 at Barcem-Padi in the wee hours of Monday.
The trailer was heading towards Margao, when it fell on its side in the paddy fields below on the straight portion of the NH66 road, after the driver reportedly veered towards the left in order to provide sufficient space to negotiate an oncoming vehicle.
The driver reportedly blamed the narrow highway with no space beyond the tarred portion of the highway, as the reason for the mishap. There were no injuries in the mishap.
Incidentally, the area has turned notorious for mishaps along this narrow stretch of road.
Although the stretch of road is straight, it neither has embankments nor leverage beyond either of its sides, making easy for heavy vehicles to topple if the tyres go beyond the tarred section.
Exactly a month ago, a trailer transporting 4 brand new cars to a showroom in Goa went off the road on May 10 and fell on its side in the fields at the same place, badly damaging all four cars and the trailer itself.
In September last year, a loaded Lorry transporting a consignment of cashew nuts from Karnataka to Maharashtra turned turtle with the cabin almost separated from the body of the vehicle.
Two years ago in September, a Karnataka registered truck loaded with fertilisers had also veered off this narrow portion of NH66.
