Concerned about two-wheeler riders risking their lives by using unsafe and non-ISI certified helmets, the transport department has convened a meeting with stakeholders on Tuesday to chalk out ways to curb the sale and use of such helmets.
According to details, Deputy Director of Transport (North Goa) B A Sawant has convened the meeting as per instructions of the North Goa District Collector and Member Secretary of the District Road Safety Committee, which will be attended by officials of Traffic Police and officials from PWD, Commercial Taxes, Education, Health, Legal Metrology, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Industries, Trade & Commerce and GOACAN.
GOACAN had petitioned the district collector stating that while consumers were required to wear helmets for their safety, they were faced with the reality that non-ISI certified helmets were being sold in the market without any checks or enforcement.
Moreover, helmets were being sold without packaging and hence, the manufacturer’s name and address were not known, no proper bills were issued and most importantly, the consumer was unable to distinguish fake from the original helmet.
The meeting will also take into account the recent central government notification that only ISI-certified helmets can be manufactured, stored and sold in wholesale and retail. The implementation of this notification lies with various agencies in the State.
