Stating that the entire process for permits of rent-a-car vehicles would be reviewed, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Thursday said he also wanted to bring down the number of rent-a-bike vehicles in the State to have safer roads and to reduce accidents, especially involving tourists.
"When all ministers met on Wednesday, there was a suggestion not to give more permits to rent-a-car vehicles because there are too many cars on the road and there is no parking and that, some park haphazardly even outside someone’s houses and blocks their access.”
“This situation cannot be allowed beyond a certain point and we will be reviewing the whole thing,” said Godinho.
Commenting on rent-a-bikes, the minister admitted that it has been a major problem.
"These rent-a-bike permits were given previously without the application of mind and I have not cleared a single new license since the last eight months and I will not clear it.”
“Even when people who have 50 bikes come for permits, I ensure that maximum permits given are restricted to twenty and I am trying to make the maximum count to ten but there is resistance from all sides," said Godinho.
"We have to keep our roads safe and tourists who use these vehicles are unaware of the roads and sometimes they depend on GPS data which may be outdated and finally meet with an accident and this causes maximum fatalities.”

We don’t want to kill tourists by not taking any steps and that's why I will totally restrict these two-wheeler rent-a-bike vehicles and bring down the numbers so that there are less accidents,” said Godinho.
