The State government on Thursday notified a Special Court in South Goa, Margao to handle cases under the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act within the limits of its jurisdiction. The Court, comprising of District Judge-2 and Additional Session Judge, will be presided over by a Lady judicial officer.
NGO Anyay Rahit Zindagi, working in the field of rescue, rehabilitation, and repatriation of victims of sex trafficking, is instrumental to run a sustained campaign to set up trial courts in both districts under the ITP Act. With the fresh development, the NGO appeals to the government to constitute a similar court in the North district where more than 75 percent of cases of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation are booked.
In a span of five years from 2014-19, maximum cases were registered at Calangute, followed by Anjuna and Panaji. The Crime Branch registered the highest cases from across different locations in the State. Margao is the fourth highest to report ITP cases.
