Vehicles heading from Pernem to Panaji hit by delays

TEETHING PROBLEMS: Trial run of traffic signals at NH-66 Peddem junction causes initial confusion and delays for motorists.

The State administration has initiated a trial run of traffic signals at the crucial NH-66 junction in Peddem. While aimed at improving traffic management, the new system has caused initial confusion and delays for motorists.
As expected, drivers have faced teething issues, with some caught off guard by the new signals and others experiencing longer wait times.
Vehicles heading towards Pernem have had a smoother passage, but those travelling from Pernem to Panaji have encountered significant delays due to extended signal timings, leading to long queues.
Similarly, motorists using the service roads to cross the highway have faced some confusion while adjusting to the system.
A senior official from the Public Works Department (National Highways) stated that the signals have been installed as a temporary measure until an underpass or overpass is constructed at the junction.
“The signals will be operated for a week on a trial basis. We will evaluate the traffic flow and, if necessary, adjust the timings to ensure smoother movement of vehicles,” the official said.
Meanwhile, a traffic officer from Mapusa expressed concerns over the lack of coordination, stating that the Traffic Cell was not informed about the trial run. The officer also claimed that recommendations from the Mapusa Traffic Cell were also not taken into account.
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira visited the junction to inspect the commencement of the trial run. He assured that the trial would be monitored daily by traffic authorities to assess its impact.
“There was an issue with signal synchronisation. After raising the matter with the collector, it was decided to start the signals on a trial basis with regular reviews. If necessary, the signals will be recalibrated based on traffic volume at different times,” Ferreira said.
He highlighted that the signals would benefit residents of two wards in his constituency, as well as people travelling to Peddem Stadium and the district hospital.
Ferreira also addressed the long-pending demand for a permanent solution at the junction, stating that he had raised the issue with the government and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari.
“The Union Minister accepted my request and approved a Vehicular Overpass (VOP) at the Peddem junction,” Ferreira said, expressing hope for a long-term resolution to traffic woes in the area.
