Truck carrying 200 bags of tobacco detained

A truck transporting 200 bags of tobacco worth Rs 30 lakh was detained at the State's border at Polem on Thursday midnight.

According to reports, a Canacona police team manning the Polem border stopped a truck on suspicion while it was entering the state. The police then contacted the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to ascertain the contents of the consignment. An FDA team visit the site and confirmed that the cargo contained 200 bags of Tobacco worth Rs 30 lakh.
The tobacco consignment was seized by the FDA, since the sale and distribution of tobacco is prohibited by Goa government under the Food Safety & Standards Act.
Investigations revealed that the consignment was booked as pan masala at Chennai and was to be delivered at Margao.
The FDA team was led by Senior Food Safety Officer Rajiv Korde and included Food Safety Officer Amit Mandrekar, Sampling Attendant Sainath Mandrekar and Driver Suresh Shirodkar.
