As part of efforts to clamp down on the illegal wood trade, a forest team seized another vehicle illegally carrying firewood at the Dodamarg Forest Checkpost. Two persons have

been arrested in this

connection.

The special patrolling team from the Pernem, Keri, Valpoi and Ponda Range Forest office led by Keri Range Forest Officer Girish Bailurkar intercepted a truck (MH-07-P-0131) at Dodamarg early Friday morning and two persons, Janu Kolekar and Santosh Patkar, both natives of Dodamarg-Maharashtra were arrested in this connection.

There has been a rise in illegal transportation of firewood from the bordering regions of Maharashtra, which has been recently declared an eco-sensitive area of the Western ghats.

But despite a ban on felloing of trees, several vehicles illegally transport firewood due to a high demand

for the wood in the bakery business.

Illegal felling and transportation of firewood is an offence and violation of the Preservation of Trees

Act 1984 and Goa Forest Rules 1964.
