All Goa Trucks Owners Association (AGTOA) president Nilkant Gawas has blamed the rash movement of two-wheelers and the government's failure to provide necessary infrastructure for most road mishaps along the mining region.
Asked to react to growing public outrage over the rash movement of mining trucks linked to road mishaps, Gawas said: “Mining transportation takes place in large scale. Hence, mining trucks are seen in large numbers on the roads. This may irritate people because of traffic congestion and other things, but it is the duty of the government to take measures in this regard.”
Gawas admitted that truckers “sometimes” drive in a rash manner, but pointed fingers at two-wheeler riders and the government for road mishaps.
“I admit that truckers sometimes drive very fast and rashly. But it is also the duty of two-wheeler riders to follow traffic norms. Most of the time, riders proceed on the wrong side and accidents then take place,” Gawas said.
According to Gawas, the government should have constructed bypasses and mining corridors for mining traffic to resolve the issue of accidents.
“The government had enough time to construct this infrastructure during the mining ban, but it failed to provide safety,” he said.
