Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr in joint collaboration with Ethernet Xpress Foundation held its conversation series at TSKK Hall, Porvorim, on August 15.
This series entitled, ‘Let’s Honour our Heroes,’ was a dialogue between the freedom fighter, Libia Lobo Sardesai and Shailendra Mehta, a journalist. It was held in honour of Libia’s 100th Birthday, which was attended by the audience from all walks of life.
Lobo Sardesai in her conversation shared with the audience how during her childhood in Mumbai, she was inspired by Gandhi’s Satyagraha Movement, which consequently burnt in her a desire to work towards the movemnet of Goa’s Freedom struggle.
With the cooperation of Maharashtra government, she and her husband late Vaman Sardesai established a secret radio station at Amboli forest and thereafter at Castle Rock forest.
When the Portuguese imposed strict ban on newspapers or any printed material in Goa, the couple broadcasted newsletters in Konkani and Portuguese and exposed the unjust Portuguese administration that caused sufferings to the Goans.
The broadcasting of newsletters continued till the liberation of Goa, she added.
She also shared with the audience her experience of starting the Home Science College, Women’s Cooperative Bank and as the First Director of Tourism, Government of Goa.
TSKK Director Dr Pandurang Phaldesai welcomed the guests. Sagar Govekar of Ethernet Xpress Foundation offered a bouquet of flowers. Fr Kelwin Monteiro, SJ honoured Lobo by offering a shawl and a memento on behalf of TSKK, Porvorim.
