Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Tuesday gave the Directorate of Health Services the go-ahead to set up tertiary healthcare facilities on the lines of a sub-district hospital at Tuem.
The health minister held discussions in this regard with the health director and other officials of his ministry, where he emphasised that the department avoid any further delay in establishing facilities at the Tuem hospital building so it relieves much of the burden on the North Goa District Hospital.
The Tuem hospital was conceptualised by forrner chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar and has been lying unused for nearly a year with not sign of the government making any efforts to make it operational.
“Our primary goal is to ensure that the hospital is equipped with the best facilities to serve the people of Pernem taluka. We are committed to creating a center of excellence, similar to GMC, where all necessary healthcare services will be available under one roof,” Rane said.
DHS sources said, the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) is still to transfer the premises in its possession and no sooner it happens work on the ground will begin to setup the healthcare facilities to make it operational.
It will eliminate the hardship of people of Pernem, who now have to travel all the way to Mapusa district hospital for medical care.
Meanwhile, Rane said the Tuem Hospital will be developed as a sub-district hospital.
“We are dedicated to ensuring that the people of Pernem receive the highest quality medical care,” Rane said, adding that he will soon have discussions with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to ensure the medical facilities are installed there sooner.
“We are committed to create the best healthcare facilities,” Rane said, adding that the Centre’s mission which is aimed at eliminating travelling long distances to avail treatment will be taken forward.
