Tur dal, sugar probe to be expedited: CM

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said, he has issued directions to expedite the enquiry related to the episode of rotting tur dal and sugar stocks in the godowns of the Civil Supplies department and the Secretary is on the job.

"The file is being expedited. The Secretary has conducted site visits at all the godowns. Such type of negligence will not be tolerated," Sawant said in response to a query related to the controversy.

The case of 241 tonnes of tur dal, totally worth several crores of rupees, having rotted in the government godowns had come to light recently.

The State government has blamed it on "bureaucratic negligence" ordered a vigilance enquiry and suspended a senior grade I officer of the Goa civil services who was director of Civil supplies department at the time, Siddhivinayak Naik.

The tur dal was procured in 2020 after the Covid-19 pandemic had hit supplies of the crucial kitchen essential but was not lifted by fair price shop owners.

A total of 408 tonnes of tur dal was procured fearing shortage in the markets but only a limited quantity of it was lifted by the fair price shop owners.
