Twists & turns on eve of meet to oust Cuncolim civic chief

MARGAO

Unprecedented drama unfolded on the eve of the special meeting on Tuesday to discuss the no trust motion against Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Laxman Naik with the office of Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) on Monday evening postponing tomorrow’s special meeting on grounds that five councillors have been deputed for training in Delhi from Tuesday.

Acting on the DMA Gurudas Pilarnekar’s letter conveyed to him at around 4.30 pm on Monday, Cuncolim Municipal Officer Joao Fernandes communicated the DMA’s decision to the 14 councillors as well as the Presiding Officer Daigodkar appointed to preside over the special meeting on Tuesday.

However, in another twist to the sordid saga coming half an hour later, Municipal Director, Pilarnekar dashed off his second letter to the Cuncolim Municipal Chief Officer at around 5.15 pm on Monday, informing that his previous letter postponing Tuesday’s meeting stands withdrawn.

The second letter addressed to the CMC Chief Officer stated that the No Confidence Motion against the Chairperson shall be carried out as scheduled ie on 27.06.2023 at 11 am in the Cuncolim Municipal Council Hall.

The unfolding developments put the CMC Chief Officer and his team on the job to serve the DMA’s second letter on the 14 councillors, stating that the special meeting to discuss the no trust motion will be held as per schedule. It is, however, learnt that the some Opposition councillors have not accepted the letter, leaving the Chief Officer to upload the DMA’s letter on the mobile phones of the individual councillors.

That’s not all. After the Presiding Officer was intimated about the postponement of Tuesday’s meeting as per the DMA’s first letter, the Chief Officer again contacted the Presiding Officer to inform that tomorrow’s meeting will be held on schedule in view of the withdrawal of the postponement letter by the DMA.

The sudden and unprecedented turn of events on the eve of the special meeting called to take up the no trust motion against beleaguered CMC Chairperson Laxman Naik left Cuncolim City Fathers and officials alike to wonder with the spate of developments unfolding on Monday evening.

A glance at the DMA’s letter addressed to the Cuncolim CO called for the postponement of the special meeting for No Confidence Motion convene on June 27 against the CMC Chairperson Laxman Naik.

Reason: The DMA stated in the letter that that it now informed by the five Councillors Videsh Desai, Polita Carneiro, Vishal Desai, Rupa Gaonkar and Rahul Desai that they have been deputed for training at New Delhi June 27 and hence have requested to postpone the special meeting after July 10.

Hence, the DMA informed the CO that the special meeting stands postponed adding that the new date shall be convened on July 11.

Minutes later, however, DMA Pilarnekar sent a letter to the CMC Chief Officer just before the Civic body could close for the day informing that the previous letter postponing Tuesday’s special meeting stands withdrawn and that the No Confidence Motion against the Chairperson shall be carried out as scheduled ie on 27.06.2023 at 11 am in Cuncolim Municipal Council Hall.
