The Old Goa police have arrested two persons for allegedly mercilessly assaulting a stray dog with a wooden stick. They were however bailed out soon later.
The accused identified as Jogindar Singh (32), a driver and Anil Kumar (28) from Madhavapur, Uttar Pradesh were caught on CCTV committing the crime on May 6.
The disturbing video of the incident had gone viral on social media promoting a complaint and FIR.
"The video, which surfaced on May 6, showed two individuals repeatedly beating a street dog with a wooden stick. A complaint was lodged by Stephen Samuel, Field Officer of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and a case was registered. During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage from the area and identified the accused," Superintendent of Police (North) Rahul Gupta said.
The accused were interrogated and confessed to the crime. They were arrested but soon granted bail upon furnishing surety.
The offence at the Old Goa Police Station is registered under Section 325 read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 11(1) (a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
