MMC reopens sewerage notice hearings after High Court rap

THE GOAN NETWORK

MARGAO: With the High Court making it clear to the Margao Municipal Council not to dispose of the show cause notices merely on time frames that city households will obtain the sewerage connections, the Margao Municipal Council on Monday conducted re-hearings of the cases to take the exercise to the logical conclusion.

Margao Municipal Chief Officer Melvyn Vaz assisted by sanitary inspectors Viraj Arabekar and Sanjay Sanguelkar conducted the hearings on Monday. A large number of households made it for the hearing in the chamber of the Chief Officer. At the end of the day, the Chief Officer is believed to have heard around 20-odd matters. The cases will be reheard at the next date of hearing.

At the last date of hearing, the High Court had made it amply clear to the Margao Municipal Council not to dispose of the show cause notices issued to the 154 households merely on the timeline issued for obtaining the sewerage connections.

Sources informed that around 40 households have already obtained the sewerage connections, while the remaining ones have applied to the PWD, sewerage for release of connections. However, there’s no sewerage line passing through the low lying areas of Malbhat, to facilitate the households to go for the sewerage connections.

The PWD, sewerage had in the recent past proposed vacuum technology as an answer to the absence of the underground sewerage line in the low lying areas of Malbhat. However, the feasibility of the vacuum technology will be known only after the consultant roped in by the Sewerage department submits its report on the study.
