CANACONA

Canacona Police registered an FIR against one Basuri Desai and another person on charges of extortion, stalking and defamation, following a complaint from Dorety D’Souza of Shellim in Loliem-Canacona.

A large number of people gathered outside Canacona police station on Wednesday in support of D’Souza and demanded the arrest of Basuri Dessai in the matter.

In her complaint, Dorety claimed the accused had defamed her husband, Ligorio, by circulating fake news on social media and further alleged that the accused was stalking her family and in order to settle the matter and had demanded Rs 5 lakh from her husband.

“A case is registered on charges of extortion, stalking and defamation. Necessary sections have been applied in the case and police investigation is underway,” informed Canacona PI Chandrakant Gawas.

Providing more details in the matter, PI Gawas informed that Gujarat police had visited Canacona police station last Saturday to investigate a liquor case.

“As per their request, they were provided with police assistance. They carried out their investigation, recorded some statements and left,” said PI Gawas.

When asked if the Gujarat police had come in search of Ligorio D’Souza or had mentioned any involvement of Ligorio D’Souza in their case, PI Gawas said: “I cannot say anything in that matter, but they (Gujarat police) never mentioned about Ligorio D’Souza. They mentioned about one Ligero, liquor distributor, MIDC, but were fully satisfied with the police assistance provided to them, carried out their investigation, recorded some statements and left Canacona.”

Acting on the complaint of Dorety D’Souza, Canacona police had summoned both parties to the Canacona police station for a preliminary enquiry into the complaint.

Desai, however, failed to turn up at the police station and the Canacona police police later registered the FIR under different sections of IPC.

Reacting to demands of the assembled people to arrest the two accused, PI Gawas, however, maintained the sections under which the FIR has been registered did not require immediate arrest of the accused.
