Leaders of the Salesians of Don Bosco from across the world, including two from Goa, are in a quandary, locked down amid the turmoil of the alarming outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in Turin, Italy after attending a once in four years conclave.

Nearly 22 provincials and their deputies heading provinces of the Society in India, including Panaji’s Odxel-based Fr Felix Fernandes and his deputy Fr Clive Telles, are now likely to be stranded in Turin after the Society’s International Chapter ended on Sunday with the re-election of their global head Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, as the society’s Rector Major.

The conclave lasted for over two weeks. The Salesian community in India and Goa, where they run several schools and an Engineering College in Fatorda, are uncertain when their provincials and vice-provincials will now be permitted return.

On Monday, the Government of India banned the entry of visitors from any European country in the wake of the galloping spread of the dreaded disease in the western continent.

Predicaments similar to the one faced by Fr Fernandes, Fr Telles and twenty other Salesian leaders from India, has also befallen several other Goans and Indians across the globe amid the chaos in the international travel sector triggered by COVID-19 pandemic.

Last month, hundreds of Goans in Kuwait and other middle-east countries were also caught in a predicament after governments there banned travel and cancelled flights to and from India.STRANDED
