The drivers of two vehicles were injured when a tanker overturned on NH66 road at Gulem and a pickup rammed into the rear of the tanker.
The incident took place when a tanker, which was returning after offloading gas in Goa, overturned by the roadside on the narrow NH66 road at Gulem in Canacona late Thursday night.
An oncoming Goods pickup coming from Karwar and proceeding towards Margao reached at the same time as the tanker toppled and rammed into the fallen tanker.
Both drivers of the tanker and pickup sustained injuries in the mishap.
With the tanker partly blocking the highway, traffic was disrupted along the route.
People have blamed the narrow and treacherous section of the NH66 at Gulem for the frequent mishaps in the area.
“The incident happened only a few metres from the Gulem Petrol Pump and a major disaster could have taken place if the fallen tanker had been loaded with the gas consignment,” opined a local.
The highway does not have any setback and there is a 3-4 feet drop on either side at the edge of the road, leaving little margin of error when heavy vehicles move at the edge of the road to negotiate oncoming vehicles.
“It is high time the PWD comes provides a permanent solution to curb these mishaps,” complained a motorist, who was reportedly driving behind the tanker and managed to stop his vehicle just in time to avoid ramming into the tanker.
