Two more foreigners placed under home restriction

Austrian, Russian nationals allegedly overstay visas

PANAJI

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Goa, has traced two more foreign nationals allegedly overstaying their visas and placed them under home restriction.

In the first case, an Austrian woman who had arrived in Goa on a tourist visa was traced at Assagao. Sources told The Goan that she has some legal matters pending in Goa but had not applied for an extension after her visa expired.

In the second case, a Russian woman accompanied by her teenage child was traced at Mandrem. Her tourist visa had expired recently, sources said. The woman and the minor have also been placed under home restriction pending further action.

At least 13 foreign nationals have been arrested in Goa this month for allegedly staying in India without valid visas or travel documents. They include nationals of Thailand, Russia, Iran, Uganda, Japan, Austria, Nigeria and Kenya. In some cases, the alleged overstays had continued for years.

The FRRO has deported or facilitated the departure of more than 50 foreign nationals from Goa this year.

Over the past 18 months, the FRRO has deported or facilitated the departure of around 160 foreign nationals, including more than 29 Bangladeshi nationals allegedly found overstaying in Goa.
