UGDP bats for grants to English schools

United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) has said that neither BBSM nor BJP can stop grants to English medium primary schools runs by the religious minorities as per the Supreme Court ruling, even as it termed Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar’s statement as an attempt to lean closer to the RSS in the game of one-upmanship with Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar.

UGDP vice-president Radharao Gracias said that the Supreme Court has made it clear that minority-run institutions don’t have the right to administer their own educational institutions, but can certainly determine the medium of instruction. “The government cannot refuse to give grants to the schools run by religious minorities,” he said.  “Arlekar has tried to show that he is a hardliner, a stand that brings him close to the RSS. On the other hand, the CM has shown on more than one occasion that he is liberal,” he added.

On the ongoing row triggered by the statement of Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar that the government should stop grants to the English medium schools run by the Diocesan schools, Radharao said the fact that another Minister in the Parsekar Cabinet, Avertano Furtado, has opposed the statement, which indicates the divisions within the BJP-led government.
