PORVORIM

In a significant achievement, the vocational units and engagement centres of Sanjay Centre for Special Education have been nominated as one of the innovative projects in special education by the United Nations.

Announcing this at a news conference, Chairperson of Sanjay School Guruprasad Pawaskar said the United Nations has selected 70 projects of a total of 400 projects received from across the world under the Zero Project programme.

“Sanjay School from Porvorim is one of them. The Zero Project programme of the United Nations finds and shares models that improve the daily lives and legal rights of all persons with disabilities.”

“The Sanjay School has been invited by United Nations to attend the three-day conference on disability and inclusive education to be held at Austria in February 2020 and around 100 keynote speakers will speak on different topics at this conference,” said Pawaskar.

Describing this achievement as one of the proudest moments for their school, Pawaskar said he would be leaving for New Delhi to attend a conference organised by Sarthak Education Trust on November 15.

“Sanjay School has now around 500 students on the rolls, with branches in Curchorem, Mapusa and Vasco so that it can reach out to students from all across Goa.”

Pawaskar informed that Sanjay school caters to special children, which include hearing impaired, partially blind, physically handicapped, mentally handicapped (all degrees of mental disabilities) and children with complex learning disabilities.

The school has physiotherapy, speech therapy and cooking units besides Claro software (reading) and a wheelchair accessible bus for students.

In 2014, a diploma education course was started, while the management plans to start BEd course in the coming academic year.

In 2016, the expansion and beautification of the Sanjay School were undertaken to provide better infrastructure to students.

“The Sanjay Centre for Special Education has received ISO 9001:2015 certificate for education, empowerment and mainstreaming of Special Children in 2018,” said Pawaskar.
