The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building under renovation in Vasco was inundated with water during the rain showers on Friday.
Sources said the situation was such that the entire floor, cabins of officials and even payment counters were seen full of rainwater and alternative arrangements had to be made to shift the counters and some documents in the various departments of the MMC.
“The MMC building was flooded with rainwater. The chief officer’s chamber was temporarily shifted to some other location to avoid damages to the documents, while the chairperson’s cabin was inundated with water as well,” said a source.
When contacted, MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar blamed the GSUDA-appointed contractor for the situation. “It is true that the MMC is inundated with rainwater and one of the major reasons is the unexpected rain.”
“Secondly, the GSUDA-appointed contractor is solely responsible for this because he had assured of taking up the roofing work after shifting us to a different location. But without informing us, the contractor removed the roofing covers citing repairs and rainwater flooded the cabins of the chief officer, chairperson and various places, including the stairs causing inconvenience to us and the public as well,” said Kaskar.
“We had planned to shift many of our counters to the basement which is renovated and earlier being used by the BSNL office. We had even told the contractor to take up roofing works only once we shift to that location. The contractor, however, has taken up the roofing work resulting in the waterlogging,” said Kaskar.
