The sound of a loud blast was first mistaken as an explosion in one of the industrial units at the Verna Industrial Estate.
Employees of most of the units close to the plateau where the plane crashed and burst into flames, rushed out to find out the nature of the explosion, only to find thick black smoke billowing in the vicinity.
That the blast was on account of a crash of a fighter jet became evident when some people saw the two pilots landing with the help of their parachutes.
A Margao-based businessman, Sidharth Mehta, who was at the Cipla Unit-II said he was inside the premises when the entire area was rocked by an explosion.
“We all came out of the unit only to find thick black smoke billowing from the plateau. Some of us even saw one of the parachute-strapped pilots trying to land,” Mehta said.
Mehta and the employees heaved a sigh of relief as the fighter aircraft crashed on the uninhabited plateau. “It would have been a disaster had the fighter jet crashed in and around the industrial estate,” Mehta added.
