United in blood, but divided by parties

PANAJI: The two brothers arrived together at a polling booth in Miramar, but chose to vote for rival parties at the Panaji bypoll on Sunday.
Two brothers, who arrived with their families at the polling booth, admitted that the 'Bhai' factor had led them to vote for different candidates.
While the elder brother, a staunch supporter of the BJP and also a well known leader in the local BJP circle said he would vote for the BJP candidate, his younger brother said he had chosen to vote for the Congress candidate this time around.
Both brothers, however, spoke on condition of anonymity as the elder brother did not want his younger sibling, who supported the Congress party, to be targetted by the BJP.
"Our family has been staunch BJP supporters and I have also voted previously on many occasions for the BJP. For the last 25 years, I have voted for BJP and former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar, who was the BJP face in Panaji,” said the younger brother.
“This time though, it is not the election of 'Bhai' and I feel I have no obligation as such to vote for the BJP. This time, I have chosen to vote for the Congress candidate as we expect him to develop Panaji like the way he developed Taleigao,” the younger brother added.
On the other hand, the elder brother said his vote for the BJP was as a mark of tribute to 'Bhai'.
"I have been a BJP supporter all my life and I am very clear that I will vote for BJP as I feel this is my small tribute to our beloved 'Bhai' who is no more with us today.”
“I feel the BJP must win in Panaji and only BJP can take up development here. Besides this, the BJP's victory will give a very happy feeling to our departed Bhai, who has been, and will always be, guiding us from above," said the elder brother.
