Will the unity displayed during the parliamentary elections be replicated in the upcoming monsoon session of the assembly, the first after a 1-1 win? This is a crucial question.
Absence of Revolutionary Goans from some key discussions led by Congress sparked more debate about this divide than the issues at hand. While Congress, Goa Forward Party and Aam Aadmi Party have jointly raised several questions, nearly 1,000 starred and unstarred questions are by the Congress while 454 will be from GFP.
However, the true unity of the opposition MLAs remains a question. Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao referred to their collective efforts. “We (opposition benches) have raised issues together. It is my role as the LoP to ensure no injustice to any MLA in the opposition,” he said in response to The Goan’s question about the Revolutionary Goans distancing itself from the otherwise united opposition.
“You either be in the opposition or be in the ruling,” he further said while criticizing turncoats.
GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai asserted “We are all together as an opposition” while stating he has tabled 454 starred and unstarred questions, along with 18 Zero Hour and Calling Attention each, and three Private Member resolutions.
“My questions are based on public suggestions too. I received around 2,175 emails and some during the Janata Darbar,” Sardesai added.
The opposition’s questions will focus on corruption, unemployment, Mhadei, job regularisation, worker retrenchment, the National Education Policy, Kala Academy, the controversial Assagao house demolition, power tariffs, tourism infrastructure, deteriorating building conditions, land scams, IDC plot allotments, the Zuari land scam, crime against women, landslides and road tender scams among several others.
“I have noticed a prevalence of ‘Money Ki Baat’ in government departments. Corruption will be one of the major issues raised in the assembly,” Sardesai said.
