MARGAO
Aquem-Baixo witnessed an uproar on Tuesday after locals demanded immediate shutting down of a gambling club in the locality fearing law and order issues.
As the resident of Aquem-Baixo along with the neighbouring Dicarpale assembled outside the club, near the Military camp, the Margao police rushed to the site to avert any law and order situation.
Aquem Baixo sarpanch Avinash Sardesai along with panch Inacio Dias and others and the sarpanch of the neighbouring village of Davorlim-Dicarpale Herculano Niasso descended on the site to take stock of the situation.
Davorlim sarpanch Herculano said the people of both Aquem-Baixo and Dicarpale want the gambling club to be shut down fearing law and order.
Pointing out that groups armed with swords and dandas were reportedly seen outside the club over some issues, Herculano said the people of both Aquem-Baixo and Dicarpale do not want gambling to create law and order in the locality.
Aquem-Baixo sarpanch Avinash Sardesai told the media that the panchayat will take stock of the situation and initiate appropriate action in the matter, while panch Inacio Dias claimed that no action has been forthcoming against the gambling activity.
